Our redesigned coop and chicken garden are layed out to best maximize the space in the 15x25’ area. Gotta have room for lounge chairs in order to properly drink with the poultry.
The coop features a roughly 12x5’ covered run that also utilizes the space under the henhouse. This, in addition to multiple perches and roost bars throughout the vertical height of the run, provides the girls with plenty of breathing room when they have to be on lockdown.
The garden features a raised, dry-stacked stone dirt bath area, mature climbing roses, and newly-planted evergreen landscaping protected for now with my favorite garden cloches from Gardeners.com.
The henhouse part of the coop features a cute little acrylic window that can be opened and closed for added ventilation (the opening is lined with hardware cloth for security), and the front wall opens for easy cleaning. There are also slide out trays for deep cleaning the roost area bedding.
The nesting boxes are just inside the door of the coop and pull out for easy cleaning. Find the wallpaper here.
The henhouse access to the interior run features a chicken-sized door and ladder ramp for daily chickening, as well as an access door for cleaning.
The coop run features a 12” deep pebble floor (for drainage) over a secure layer of hardware cloth. The far end has a dirt bath so that when the girls are incarcerated, they still have dirt to pick around in and bathe in. Multiple roost bars allow for use of vertical space.
We keep the feed dishes outside the run and put away leftover food at the end of every day in order to help manage pests and predators that maybe attracted to it. The only time we feed inside the run is when the girls are locked down for long stretches of time.
A few pots of herbs and colorful blooms are usually protected with fencing (when I’m not photographing). Once the bougainvillea has established, it can be left unprotected to sprawl across the fence. Additionally, we plan to have some planters on the fence to squeeze in some vertical gardening where the chickens can’t get to it.
Just beyond the frog fountain, through the stripey gate, is the Chicken Bar. In case you were wondering.
