Carrot Blood Orange Rum Punch

Rum

The fabulous folks over at Drizly decided that it was in my best interest to send me some rum, and I agreed. I very much agreed. Alcohol? Shipped directly to my door? Yes please to that. Especially since it's always about this time of year when I start to get itchy for some summer vibes, and, more importantly, for some summery rum drinks.

But yanno...it's winter still, so how about a winter-citrus-root-vegetable-Tiki situation? Makes perfect sense. Let's do that.

Drizly sent me two lovely bottles of alcohols: Ballast Point Three Sheets White Rum, and The Kraken Black Spiced Rum. And I wasn't mad about it. At all.

To make this cocktail right, you need yourself a Tiki mug. Also, you need lots of superfluous garnish. You're also going to need some homemade grenadine (I like this recipe), or some sort of high quality, all-natural grenadine.

To make one serving:

  • 3 dashes orange bitters

  • 2 oz. light rum

  • 1/2 oz. grenadine

  • 1 oz. fresh carrot juice

  • 2.5 oz. fresh blood orange juice

  • 1/2 oz. dark, spiced rum

  • crushed ice

  • garnish-- I used a carrot, a slice of blood orange, two baby ruby Swiss chard leaves, and a few Luxardo maraschino cherries. Don't forget your twisty straws.

Start by filling your glass with crushed ice. Next, combine the first six ingredients with ice in a shaker, and shake until chilled. Strain into your ice-filled glass. Float dark rum over the top and garnish your glass liberally.

And don't forget to check out Drizly.com for all your booze-delivery needs. Plus they share lots of inspiring cocktail recipes on Instagram and Facebook. You should go to there.

Look at the garnish-hunting concentration face on that bird. Fitting that one of the rums for this beverage was 'The Kraken'. It's what I call this particular creature right here. As always, keep your cocktail out of pecking range. Don't be like me and dangle it right in front of their beady little dinosaur eyes.

But CHEERS to drinking weird Tiki drinks in the winter (and to Drizly for making it happen)!!!!
